Katharine Withers Hancock
Katharine Withers Hancock, 96, of Richmond, and formerly of Charlottesville, died Saturday, February 1, 2014 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Richmond after a short illness.
She was born on August 30, 1917, in Lynchburg, a daughter of the late John Alexander and Kate Withers (Smith) Hancock of Locust Hill in Albemarle County. She graduated from Saint Mary’s College, Raleigh and Lynchburg College.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Robert Charles Hancock; her son, Robert Alexander Hancock; sister, Virginia H. Pegram; and great-granddaughter, Ella Katharyn Hancock.
Mrs. Hancock was a retired school teacher, having taught at Albemarle High School 20 years. She was a former member of Christ Episcopal Church in Charlottesville; Rho Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Society and Treasurer for 12 years, and Senior Center of Charlottesville.
Survivors include her daughter, Mary Katharine H. Easter and husband, Calvin; daughter-in-law, Doris Lee Hancock; grandchildren, David Hancock and wife Christi, Mary Lee H. Morris and husband, Randy, Todd Hancock and wife, Veronica, Kevin Hancock, and Katharine E. Ross and husband, John, all of the Richmond area, John Easter and wife, Ashley of Chesapeake, and Charles H. Easter of Queenstown, New Zealand; great-grandchildren, Dawson and Sierra Hancock, Carter, Bryce, and Kelsey Morris, Todd Hancock, Jr., John Ross, V, and baby Jacob Easter due in two weeks; as well as a number of loving cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
The family will receive friends from 10:00 AM until 12:00 Noon on Thursday, February 6, 2014 at Thacker Brothers Scottsville Funeral Home.
A graveside service will be conducted at 2:00 PM, Thursday, February 6, 2014 in the Scottsville Cemetery by The Rev. Peter Way.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Senior Center or Christ Episcopal Church of Charlottesville.
