Lawrence R. Settle

Lawrence R. Settle,  75, of Scottsville, died on Monday, March 3, 2014 at his home .

He was born April 5, 1938 in Culpeper, a son of the late Russell R. Settle and Gladys (Brown) Collier; and was raised by his aunt and uncle, the late Medford and Lottie Aylor.

In addition to his parents, aunt and uncle, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Connie Rebecca Johnson.

Mr. Settle served in the United States Navy.  He was a heavy equipment operator for many years with Faulkner Construction.  In 1994, he joined his son, Lyle, and created the family business, Settle Construction, Inc.  Lawrence was a fan of the Redskins, Baltimore Orioles and the UVA Cavaliers.  He looked forward to the yearly trips to Oak Island, NC with his family to fish in the surf and eat seafood.  He was a gentleman farmer who loved being outdoors,  especially at the farm, the Winks Place.  Lawrence never met a stranger because he smiled all the time.  He was a member of Oak Grove United Methodist Church in Madison County.

Survivors include his wife of 44 years, Frances (Baker) Settle; three children, Lyle Ray Settle and his wife Mandy; and Laura Lynn Settle, all of Scottsville; and Carlton Johnson, Jr. of Louisa; a brother, James Collier and his wife, Jane; a sister, Brenda Shifflett and her husband, Graham, all of Charlottesville; 9 grandchildren, Brandon Johnson, Stephanie Gordon, Sara Talley, Cody Johnson, Brett Johnson, Becky Johnson, Joshua Hollins, Katie Settle and John Settle; and 2 great-grandchildren, Julie Johnson and Mila Gordon.

A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Friday, March 7, 2014  at Wesley's Chapel U.M.C. by the Reverends Greg Miller and Richard Clore.  Burial will follow at the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. on Thursday, March 6, 2014 at Thacker Brothers Scottsville Funeral Home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Wesley's Chapel U.M.C. Building Fund, PO Box 189, Palmyra, VA 22963.

Although we only knew Lawrence for a short while, we knew him long enough to know he was a special man. He loved his wife and family dearly and the world was definitely a better place because he was in it. We are sorry to lose our good friend and we will keep his loved ones close in our thoughts and prayers. Teri & Jim

Sally Garland and I were so sorry that bad weather in Charlottesville kept us from being with you for the memorial service. As devoted friends of Laura, we know how much her father was loved and admired. We both send much love to all the family, especially to our dear Laura.
