Stephen Leo Staves

     Stephen Leo Staves, 65, of Palmyra, departed this life on Friday, August 1, 2014 to meet his Lord.

     He was born on June 2, 1949 in Tupper Lake, NY, a son of the late Van Staves and Beulah (Laramie) Staves and was the youngest of six children.

     In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Skip and two sisters, Karen and Margie.

     Mr. Staves worked primarily as a carpenter and as maintenance supervisor at Charlottesville High School.  He loved hunting and fishing and was most at home when he was in the woods of Virginia and New York.  As a young man he played golf and more recently enjoyed watching the sport with his wife and grandson, Alex.

     Survivors include his wife of 30 years, Kathryn Marjorie (Kopp) Staves; four children,  James "Jed" Dukett and wife, Juli of Tupper Lake, NY; Derek Staves and wife, Xenia of Kissimmee, FL; Terry Sauvie and girlfriend, Diane of Palmyra; Michelle Williams and husband, Jon of Palmyra; nine grandchildren, Alex, Andrew, Rebecca "Becca", Noah, Jacob, Olivia, Tyler, Elli and Luka; a brother, Gary Staves of Rochester, NY; a sister, Barbara Gagnon of Tupper Lake, NY; and a number of nieces and nephews.

     A funeral service will be conducted at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, August 5, 2014 at Lake Christian Church by Pastor Brian Orahood.  Burial will be private.

     The family will receive friends from 6:30- 8:30 p.m. on Monday, August 4, 2014 at Thacker Brothers Lake Monticello Funeral Home.

     Memorial contributions may be sent to Legacy Hospice, 500 Faulconer Dr., Suite 200, Charlottesville, VA 22903.

     The family would like to thank Legacy Hospice and the staff of the Martha Jefferson Cancer Center and the second floor nurses and doctors.
