Hazel M. Starkey

     Hazel Beatrice (McInturff) Starkey, 94, of Scottsville, passed away on Tuesday, May 9, 2017, at her residence.

     She was born on June 11, 1922, in Erwin, Tennessee, a daughter of the late Dave and Cora (Jones) McInturff.

     In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Rufus Starkey; two brothers, Willard and Everett; four sisters, Edith, Ada, Lilly, and Ruby; and a daughter-in-law, Wendy Starkey.

     Mrs. Starkey was a loving and devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She was a member of Scottsville Independent Baptist Church where she was known as the "Mother of the Church."  She enjoyed quilting, crocheting, gardening, and canning.

     Survivors include five children, David Shelton and wife, Gloria of Hopewell, Judy Starkey of Palmyra, Joseph Starkey and wife, Tammy of Louisa, Jim Starkey and wife, Linda of Scottsville, and Jack Starkey of Buckingham; a sister, Gladys Arwood of Gary, Indiana; eight grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, 17 great-great- grandchildren, four great-great-great-grandchildren, and a number of nieces, nephews, and other extended family members.

     A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. on Friday, May 12, 2017, at the Scottsville Independent Baptist Church by Pastors Harlin Sykes and Margaret Bragg. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

     The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Thursday evening, May 11, 2017, at Thacker Brothers Scottsville Funeral Home.

     In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Scottsville Independent Baptist Church, 181 Shores Road, Palmyra, VA 22963.
