Bernard enjoyed gardening and working in the hayfields for many years, but his greatest joy was spending time with his family and friends. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. He is survived by his loving wife, Margaret Shiflett Belew; a son, Glen Belew; four daughters, Brenda Lilly and husband, Doug, Tamela Rosas and husband, Oscar, Pamela Cheek and husband, Shane, and Denise Shaver and husband, Kevin; four stepchildren, Douglas and Kevin Shiflett, Tammy Mays, and Kim Lawson and fiance, Brandon Cobbs; two brothers, Paul and Early Belew; a brother-in-law, Henry "Billy" Shaver; 16 grandchildren, eight step-grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren (number eleven is due in February); special life time friends, Randy Buckhart, Dan McLaughlin, and Ronald Hunt; and a number of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and other extended family members and friends. The family would like to give a special thanks to the Staff of Hospice of the Piedmont, especially his nurse, Alex and Chaplain Kendall for all of their kind and loving care throughout the last months of his life. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m., Friday, November 2, 2018, at Thacker Brothers Scottsville Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Alberene Cemetery. I would like offer my deepest sympathy for the loss of your loved one. As you cherish the many fond memories, please reflect on the time when aging, sickness and death will be conditions of the past. (Revelation 21:3,4; 1Corinthians 15:26) This is what our loving God Jehovah has promised and Jesus Christ himself guaranteed the hope of seeing our loved ones again by means of the resurrection. (John 5:28,29; Acts 24:15; Isaiah 26:19) May God’s word bring you comfort during this difficult time as we await the fulfillment of his promises.
