Doris J. Mitchell

"To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under Heaven.  A time to be born and a time to die."  -- Ecclesiastes 3:1-2

Doris Jeanette (Johnson) Mitchell, 86, of Scottsville, passed away on Saturday, November 24, 2018 at her home surrounded by her family and loyal cat, Nutmeg.

She was born on February 5, 1932, a daughter of the late Herman and Dorothy (Glass) Johnson.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Lynn D. Mitchell; two brothers, Harvey Lee and Raymond Wesley Johnson; and a great-grandson, Dorian Broyles.

Doris loved camping, Bluegrass music, working in her yard, tending to her flowers and grapes, and spending time with her family and friends. She was known by many names, Mama, Grandma, Mammie, Mammy Dear, and Queenie.  She was the foundation to a large family who loved her dearly.

Survivors include six children: Linda Harris and husband, Tommy, Wanda Palmer and husband, Grover, Larry "Frosty" Mitchell and wife, Martha, Sharon Jordan, Paula Aldridge and husband, Tommy, and Anita Riley and husband, Kevin; eighteen grandchildren: Travis Harris, Tess Mendenhall, Patricia Swain, Katherine and Cynthia Bickley, Tracy Mitchell, Carrie Everard, Emma Herndon, Matthew and Robert Jordan, Amanda Jones, Seth Aldridge, Hannah Collins, Sarah Holdgreiwe, Christina Cheatham, Jessica Woodward, Anthony Wermann, and Mitchell Minahan; forty-one great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and a number of other extended family members and friends.  Her memory will live on forever in the hearts of those left behind.

The family would like to acknowledge caregivers Holly Clark and April Aldridge.  Their excellent care enabled Doris to remain in her home and for that the family is extremely grateful.

A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 am, Tuesday, November 27, 2018 at Wesley's Chapel United Methodist Church by Pastor David Vogt.  Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

There will be no formal visitation or family night at the funeral home, however the family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 pm, Monday evening, November 26, 2018 at their mother's residence.

Sympathy and fond tho' distant memories of Doris whom I knew when I was a youngster, and whose family I knew well. She was a good friend to my mom Helen Black.

That scripture is so powerful the one that was used in the obituary those words are so true. The good thing about this is that God will eliminated all wickedness, the happiness of righteous ones will never again be undermined by lawlessness and unrighteousness.

Ms. Doris was a true “Southern Lady” whose legacy will live on in her children, grandchildren and beyond! Through the years I have always remembered fondly the Sunday lunches she would cook, and how she, (and the entire family) always welcomed me in their home.

I know she and Mr. Lynn are smiling down on the family, always watching over them!

To the Mitchell Children: You all had a wonderful and special mother and you were so lucky to have her for so many years. I always got a kick out of Doris telling something funny. She would get this look on her face as she tried so hard not to laugh at herself, which, eventually, she would. Then everyone around her would crack up laughing too, usually, until we all had tears running from our eyes. Oh boy, those were some of the best days. I feel so blessed to have known Doris Mitchell. Heaven has gained another angel!
