Janice M. O'Malley

Janice Mildred (Boeke) O'Malley, 84, of Palmyra, Virginia passed away on Thursday, December 20, 2018 at Our Lady of Peace in Charlottesville.

She was born on September 2, 1934, in Dayton, Ohio, a daughter of the late Linus and Mildred (Grillot) Boeke and grew up in Chillicothe, Ohio, graduating as Class Valedictorian at Catholic Central High School in 1952.  She then attended college at the University of Dayton and St. Elizabeth Hospital School of Nursing, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 1956. While there, she met her future husband, George C. O’Malley. They tied the knot on September 1, 1956 at St Peter’s Church in Chillicothe, Ohio beginning 62 years of marriage together.

Janice worked as a nurse at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Washington, DC while George attended dental school at Georgetown University. Following his graduation in 1959, they moved to USMC Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. There George worked for 2 years as a US Naval Dental Officer.

In 1961, they moved to Long Island, New York where George had been raised. There, for the next 34 years, Janice skillfully raised their five children and ran the front desk at George’s dental practice.

Following George’s retirement in 1999, they relocated to Palmyra. There, they became active members of Saints Peter and Paul Parish for the next 19 years. Janice was a Eucharistic Minister, a member of the Parish Council, and a member of the choir.  One of her greatest pleasures was meeting and shaking the hand of Pope John Paul II, with a photograph taken of the event.

As health issues developed, Janice spent her final days at Our Lady of Peace nursing home in Charlottesville.

Anyone who has ever met Janice will remember her for one thing: her big, warm, welcoming smile. Janice is dearly loved by her children and grandchildren. Her kind, warm nature was evident to all who were lucky enough to have known her.

Her dedication to her husband, children, and church family will be fondly remembered. Janice lived her life with joy and a passion to serve others. She leaves us with precious memories in which we are sure to find comfort at this time.

Janice enjoyed gardening and was a member of the Fluvanna County Garden Club.  She also enjoyed knitting and crocheting, reading, and was an avid Bridge player.

In addition to her husband,  George, survivors include; five children: Kathleen O'Malley, Timothy O'Malley (Allyson), Kevin O'Malley (Mayumi), Maureen Bodensteiner (Joseph), and Sean O'Malley (Siobhan); eleven grandchildren: Brendan, Kellie, Liam, Brigit, Andrew, Shannon, Eoin, Kiera, Kaitlyn, Meaghan, and Aisling; a brother: Joseph Boeke (Ann); four sisters, Maryann Middendorp (Andrew), Rosalind Boeke, Kathleen Quaglieri (Robert), and Jeanne Boeke; and a number of nieces, nephews, and other extended family members.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1:00 pm, Wednesday, December 26, 2018 at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church with the Reverend Gerald Francis Musuubire as the Celebrant.  Interment will be held at Saint Patrick Cemetery in Huntington, New York on Friday, December 28.

The family will receive friends from 9:00 am until 11:00 am, Wednesday, December 26, 2018 at Thacker Brothers Lake Monticello Funeral Home.
