Arline "Skippy" Brown Obituary

Arline “Skippy” Maye Brown entered the gates of Heaven on Thursday, December 1, 2022 surrounded by her family at her home in Buckingham County.

Skippy was born Wednesday, September 21, 1938 to the late Lila (Johnson) and Franklin Sears in Newport News, Virginia.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Ronald Steven Sears; and a grandson, William Lee Tibbs.

Skippy met Lester Brown at Stewartsville High School in Bedford County, and they enjoyed 66 years of marriage. They began their life together in Northern Virginia, where all three of their children were born and made many happy memories before moving to Buckingham in 1970. In 1972, Skippy and Les opened Skippy’s Market in the Old Dorrier building located in downtown Scottsville. For over a decade, they ran a thriving business that was intertwined with the Scottsville community while building friendships that will last a lifetime.

Skippy was a woman of great faith and was a long-time member of Goshen Baptist church. She was the leader of the Woman’s Missionary Union at Goshen for over 30 years and was humbled by the impact their outreach missions were able to have. Anyone who knew Skippy saw that she loved being a wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, friend, and an active member in her community. When she wasn’t doing the Lord’s work, she was tending to His creations in her garden.

In addition to her loving husband, Skippy is survived by her daughter, Connie Tibbs (Gary); two sons, David Brown (Becky) and Steve Brown (Sandra); six grandchildren Patricia Dale, Fallone Brown, Ginger Allen (Jeremy), Joshua Brown (Lindsay), Steve “Bucky” Brown, and Randi Brown; eight great-grandchildren Tyreke, Jakia, Nicholas, Raelynn, Bentley, Kallie, Jace, and Emma; a brother, Wayne Sears (Annie); a sister Carol Ragland (Alfred); a sister-in-law, Pat (Brown) Patsel; a “bonus” grandson, Scott Redd; and a former grandson-in-law Michael Dale. Her warm presence will be missed by special friends Mary and James Doss, Doug Tapscott, Lindsay and Carolyn Tapscott, Kim Hanes and family, Joann Songer, Terri and Stan Burch, and Helen Mika,  along with a host of nieces, nephews, and many other dear friends.

The family would like to express their appreciation for Barbara DeLoach, Chantel, Kendra "Blue", Jason, and Manny at Albemarle Health & Rehabilitation Center for their love and commitment in their care for Skippy.

The family has entrusted Thacker Brothers Funeral Home Scottsville with arrangements. The memorial service will take place on Saturday, December 10, 2022 at 2:00 pm at Goshen Baptist Church, 2381 Axtell Road in Howardsville. Rev. Henry Enoch and Rev. Tim Scott will be officiating the service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Goshen Baptist Church, designating WMU as the recipient in honor of Skippy’s dedication to spreading the Lord’s message.
