Arthur Clayton “Ace” Lawhorne, 97, of Barren Ridge, died on Thursday, February 24, 2022, at the home of his son.
He was born on August 6, 1924 in Forks of Buffalo, a son of the late Allie Reed and Grace Lelia Lawhorne.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Elizabeth (Gilbert) Lawhorne; daughter, Joyce Ann Rhodes; three brothers, Joseph R., Lawrence H., and William A. Lawhorne; and two sisters, Janie Louise Drumheller and Alice L. Lilley.
Mr. Lawhorne was a WWII veteran, having served in the US Army Air Corps from 1943-1946, after which he served for a number of years in the Army Reserves. He worked as an Architect and Builder and was President of Custom Manufactured Homes. Along with his wife, Virginia, he owned Ace Antiques in Weyers Cave and enjoyed refinishing and selling oak furniture. Ace loved music and was a talented guitar player and instructor. He coached baseball, enjoyed flower gardening and was a long-time member of the New Hope and Barren Ridge-Annex Ruritan Clubs and Barren Ridge Church of the Brethren. He lived a full life and was very devoted to his family.
Family members include two sons, Larry Clayton Lawhorne of Barren Ridge, and David Allen Lawhorne (Donna) of Waynesboro; six grandchildren, Dwayne Eric Rhodes (Angel) of Barren Ridge; LaDonna Rhodes Curry (Wayne) of Barren Ridge, Jamie Lee Lawhorne (Cara) of Gilbert, SC, Timothy Wayne Lawhorne of Staunton, Ashley Lorraine Lawhorne of Waynesboro, Trey Allen Lawhorne of Waynesboro; seven great-grandchildren, Marc Aaron Curry, Peyton Matthew Lawhorne, Austin James Lawhorne, Avery Elizabeth Lawhorne, Levi Richard Lawhorne, Aaliyah Renee Lawhorne, and Landon Edward Meador; a sister, Emily Wagner (Phil) of Waynesboro; a brother Donnie Lawhorne (Barbara) of Waynesboro; and son-in-law, John Thomas Rhodes of Barren Ridge.
A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, March 2, 2022 at Barren Ridge Church of the Brethren by Pastors Henry and Janet Elsea, and Galen Combs. Burial with military honors will follow in the church cemetery.
Active pallbearers will be members of the family.
The family will receive friends from 5:00 – 7:00 PM on Tuesday, March 1, 2022 at the church.
