Barry Rutland Obituary

Barry Kent Rutland, 70, of Harrisonburg, died on Wednesday, January 4, 2023, at his home.

He was born on July 16, 1952, in Charlottesville, a son of the late Gordon Wyatt Rutland, Sr. and Georgia (Pearson) Rutland of Scottsville.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters; Oweida Virginia Rutland and Frances Lawana Stewart; and a brother, Gordon Wyatt Rutland, Jr. 

Barry was a graduate of Albemarle High School and worked in I.T. for many years, retiring from Daikin in Verona in 2020. He was a veteran of the Army National Guard where he enjoyed being a medic. He was an avid fisherman, outdoorsman, and a drummer in the Virginia Blues Society. Devoted husband, father, and grandfather, he was surrounded by love when he passed.

Survivors include his wife, Kim (Herring) Rutland; a sister, Georgia “Gay” Boggs of Costa Rica; two daughters, Allyson Rutland and spouse, Kaitlin Najdzinski and son, and Emily (Rutland) Marion and spouse, Eric Marion II; a granddaughter, Blythe Alma Norman, and a host of nieces and nephews. 

A memorial service will be conducted at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 12, 2023 at Thacker Brothers Scottsville Funeral Home by Pastor Brian Rutland, during which the family will receive friends. Burial in Scottsville Cemetery will be private.

In lieu of flowers, the family would ask that donations be made to Hospice Care in Virginia.
