Beverly Gwen Meeks, 66, of Crozet, Virginia, passed away on Saturday, November 26 at the University of Virginia Hospital in Charlottesville, Virginia.
Gwen was born on October 23, 1956, to Phyllis O. McCarty and Milford J. Dean in Cumberland, Maryland. After Gwen graduated in 1974 from Fort Hill High School in Cumberland, Maryland, she went on to attend Frostburg State University, located in Frostburg, Maryland, where she graduated in 1978 with a degree in education.
Gwen started her 40-year teaching career with Albemarle County Public Schools at B.F. Yancey Elementary School before moving to Agnor-Hurt Elementary School and then on to Meriwether Lewis Elementary School. She happily taught 3rd and 4th grades most of those years, finally retiring in 2020.
In 1988, Gwen met Steven G. Meeks. Gwen and Steven got married on July 15, 1989. They went on to have Jenna E. Meeks on February 1, 1994.
Gwen was a devoted and nurturing teacher to her students over the years, but when it came to her own family, she was a loving and caring mother. Her two main passions in life were teaching and all things Disney. One of her greatest joys was sharing her love for Disney with her daughter and often traveled to Walt Disney World in Florida.
Gwen was predeceased by both her parents and a sister Deborah Sue Dean. She is survived by Steven, her daughter Jenna of Orlando, Florida, her brother Gary L. Dean and his wife Melissa of Olive Branch, Mississippi, her sister Marjorie E. Orndorff and husband, Gary, of Winchester, Virginia, niece Sheree Dean, and two nephews, Phillip A. Joy and Trevor Dean. Gwen's extended family included Steven’s parents Gene and Glenna Meeks, who were her closest neighbors, as well as his sisters Stephanie Koon and Sherrie Witmer.
Arrangements are entrusted to Thacker Brothers Scottsville Funeral Home and are private. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
