Birden Eqular Rush

Birden Eqular Rush, 90, of Esmont, VA, departed this life on Sunday, February 18, 2024, at Albemarle Health and Rehab in Charlottesville, VA.  She was born June 7, 1933 in Esmont, a daughter of the late Gustavius and Mary Thomas Gray.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, James Ed Rush; a son, James Ray Rush; two sisters, Mariah Gray and Violet Terry; a brother, Clifford L. Gray; a granddaughter, Naomi Rush, and a grandson, Harvey Lamont Rush.

Dean, as she was fondly known, was a faithful member of Chestnut Grove Baptist Church.  She was active in the Ladies Club and regularly attended services until her health began to fail.  She was soft spoken with a gentle smile, but also enjoyed a good laugh.  Dean loved the Lord with all her heart, enjoyed gospel music and bible study while at home.  She was a top-of-the-line homemaker who was always cooking, cleaning, and serving others.  She nurtured her children, grandchildren, and many kids in the community.  Her church family will remember her kind spirit and will never forget her apple cobblers and sweet potato pies. 

She leaves to cherish memories three sons, David (Carolyn) of Waynesboro, VA, Charles (Cheryl) of Esmont, and Levi Rush of Charlottesville; three daughters, Shirley (Roy) Pendleton of Keswick, VA, Nancy Rush and Darlene Rush of Esmont; one sister, Beatrice Burton of Richmond, VA; one brother-in-law, Walker Rush of Esmont; 18 grandchildren, James, Roy II, Stacy, DeAngelo, Aisshia, Delvin, David Jr., Christopher, David, Jermaine, Rodney, Rondell, Tashika, Tanishia, Des’demonia, Kelvin, Constance, and Bryant; 35 great grandchildren, 6 great-great-grandchildren; a host of other relatives and friends.

May God Bless all who have shown our family so much compassion and love during this difficult time.  We appreciate the visits, kind gestures, words of encouragement, and prayers.  Special thanks to Albemarle Health & Rehab, Hospice of the Piedmont, and caregivers; Cheryl Rush, Pearl Rush, and Darling Lowe for the loving care you provided.  We thank you from the bottom of our hearts!

A funeral service will be conducted at 1PM on Friday, February 23, 2024 at Chestnut Grove Baptist Church in Esmont. Internment will follow immediately after in the church cemetery. 

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.
