Charles Mark Dunning, 74, husband of Sally Rose (Lamb) Dunning of Palmyra, died suddenly and unexpectedly on Tuesday, October 12, 2021, in Marion, VA, while on a wonderful trout fishing trip with his son, John.
Mark was born on June 7, 1947, in St. Louis, MO, son of the late Reverend Charles Raymond and Gloria Patricia (Gannon) Dunning.
Mark served in the US Army from 1970 through 1973, following which he worked for the US Army Corps of Engineers for 31 years, in Missouri and in Ft. Belvior, Virginia, specializing in water resources. Following his retirement in 2004, he worked as a consultant for several organizations, including Fluvanna County.
Mark earned a Ph.D. from Washington University in St. Louis, MO. He loved studying, and his greatest interests were gardening, reading, traveling, and most of all, fishing.
In addition to his wife Sally, survivors include three adult children: John Dunning (Kelly) of Leesburg, VA; Aimee Ricker (Frederick) of Williamsburg, VA, and Jeanne Sam (Bin) of Palmyra, VA. His grandchildren include Thomas, Joseph, and Eleanor Sam; Asia (Bryson) Silao; Kiara Hagans; Markus Hernandez; and one great-grandchild, Kanoa Silao. Mark is also survived by his brother Terry Dunning (Alli), and his sister Melissa Brown (Randy), and numerous dear friends, cousins, nieces, nephews, aunts, and in-laws.
He is sorely missed by his two devoted dogs, Baxter and Daisy.
The family will receive friends at a visitation on Tuesday evening, October 19, between 6 and 8 pm, at Thacker Brothers Lake Monticello Funeral Home, and a funeral service will be conducted on Wednesday, October 20 at 11 am, at the funeral home.
