Charles Daniel Merritt

Charles Daniel Merritt (Danny) went to be with his Lord on October 15, 2024 at 77 years old. His family is deeply saddened by his death and the loss of a very special person who left a mark on their lives. 

Danny is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 42 years, Becky, and his children Tina Merritt of Waynesboro and James Merritt (Maggie) of Montpelier.  He is also loved and remembered by his grandchildren, Derek Dye, Sage Dye, Marina Merritt and Archie Merritt, and his siblings and cousins.

Danny was born in Charleston, WV, to Earl Robert Merritt and Rebecca Cochran Merritt and was raised by his grandparents, Bill and Stella Cochran. Danny was a millwright by trade and a loyal member of Mid-Atlantic Regional Millwright Local Union for almost 50 years.  He worked at numerous power stations and for large corporations across the eastern states until his retirement in 2005 but continued supporting union membership even after retirement. 

Danny will be remembered as a kind and gentle man who was full of wisdom and loyal to his wife, children, siblings, and cousins.  He was fun and spirited with wit and charm, and could make anyone laugh. People enjoyed being around him. His passions included archeology, botany, reading, and birdwatching. Danny shared his passions with his children, who now have much of the same love.  He was a man of many talents and was used as a source of information on Indian relics and plant advice.  He had a special love for hybridizing daylilies and peonies, as well as growing numerous varieties of tomatoes, carefully planning and organizing his next season planting activity. You would find stacks of source information next to his favorite chair.

Danny found comfort and peace in being with the Lord and one of his favorite places was with his wife as they had their morning coffee together for 42 years. He was deeply cared for by the people around him and will be loved and missed by his family and friends.

A funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, October 21, 2024 at Thacker Brothers Scottsville Funeral Home by Pastor Michael Daily.  Burial will follow in Alberene Cemetery.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
