Dewey Lee (Stiggs) Evans transitioned to his Heavenly Home on August 8,2023 following a courageous battle with cancer. Dewey was born on March 26, 1937, to the late Clarence Lee Evans and Alma Henry Clements Evans. He is preceded by his brothers, Norman Evans, Howard Evans, Marshall Evans, Raymond Evans, Homer Evans, and his sister Ruby Evans Napier.
Dewey is survived by his wife Barbara and his son Rodney Evans (Terry) as well as the children he loved as his own, Thomas Evans (Lori), Debra Evans Wheeler (David), Kimberly Evans McDonald (Mick) and grandchildren Kyle Evans, Tyler Evans, Reed Evans, Kayla Evans, Sean McDonald, Zachary Wheeler, Joshua Wheeler, and Hannah Evans. He is also survived by his brother Otha (Johnny) Evans. Especially close to Dewey’s heart is Lark Elkins, along with her siblings, Lilia and Warrior and their parents Alicia and Korey Elkins.
Dewey’s family was his main priority and he loved them unconditionally. He enjoyed the special times of family gatherings, especially holidays. He loved spending time outdoors and appreciating nature. He also enjoyed western re-reruns and was an enthusiastic NASCAR fan.
Dewey loved the Lord and his church; he was a longtime member of Scottsville Baptist Church and faithfully served as Deacon, Sunday School Teacher, Usher/Greeter, Sunday School Director, and the Visitation Ministry. Dewey especially loved the Visitation Ministry and was vigilant in serving and visiting.
As a young man, Dewey proudly served his country in the US Army and was honorably discharged in 1961. Dewey was a Master Plumber and began his plumbing career with W. E. Brown Plumbing & Heating and eventually worked for and retired from UVA Facilities Management in 2007.
A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 AM on Thursday, August 17, 2023 at Scottsville Baptist Church, 690 Harrison St. in Scottsville, VA with the committal at Alberene Church Cemetery immediately after the service.
Visitation will take place from 5:00 to 7:00 PM on Wednesday, August 16, 2023 at Thacker Brothers Scottsville Funeral Home, located at 650 Valley Street.
