Fred Elbert Barker, Sr., 90, of Palmyra, VA passed away on Friday, January 12, 2024, at Albemarle Health and Rehab Center in Charlottesville, VA.
Fred was born in Washington County on November 5, 1933, a son of the late Bailey David and Myrtle (Boardwine) Barker. Fred was the youngest of nine children.
Fred retired from CSX Railroad in October 1995, where he worked as a heavy equipment operator. Following his retirement, Fred greatly enjoyed farming, volunteering at the food bank, and serving as a deacon at Scottsville Independent Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, Fred was preceded in death by his loving wife of 66 wonderful years, Helen Baird Barker; eight siblings, Stella, Claude, Cliff, David, Jessie, Lish, and Vernon Barker, and Loleen Grubbs.
Left to cherish his memory are his children: Fred “Bert” Barker, Jr. and wife, Teresa, Jerry Barker and wife, Jean, Wendell Barker and partner Michelle Brodie, and Carol Ann (Barker) Bragg and husband, Ronald; grandsons: Kyle and wife, Katherine, Jeffrey and wife, Brenna, and Calvin Barker, Hunter and partner, Skyler Hippert, Cody, and Caleb Bragg; a great granddaughter, Cora Barker, great grandsons, Nolan and Easton Barker and Walker Bragg; sister-in-law, Helen L. Barker; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be conducted at Scottsville Independent Baptist Church, 181 Shores Road, Palmyra, VA 22963 at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 20, 2024, with Pastor Devin Watkins officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends on Friday, January 19, 2024, from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. at Thacker Brothers Scottsville Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Fred’s memory to Scottsville Independent Baptist Church.
