Harley Smith Obituary

Harley Lee Smith, 88, of Palmyra, passed away on Monday, June 6, 2022, in Charlottesville, Virginia.

He was born on May 10, 1934, in New London, NC, a son of the late Theodore Roosevelt Smith, Sr. and Leune Jeanette (Herlocker) Smith.

Mr. Smith proudly served in the U.S. Army for several years and retained a fierce patriotism throughout his life. After his service, he then went on to pursue a career in finance until he retired in 1989. After retirement though, he always was busy, working around the house, maintaining a garden, and just keeping busy. He was a man of simple pleasures. He enjoyed nothing more than his sweet tea, watermelon, biscuits, and chocolate pudding.

Mr. Smith had a strong work ethic and passed that along to both his sons.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 60 plus years, Reba Gray (Wood) Smith; three brothers, Theodore Roosevelt Smith, Jr., Roger Smith and Jim Smith; two sisters, Mary Alice Crump and Barbara Ann Smith; along with a brother in-law, Richard Wood.

Survivors include two sons, T. Nathan Smith and his wife, Stephanie Fan, and Michael B. Smith and his partner, Maria Zots; two brothers, Sidney and David Smith, both of New London, NC; along with a host of other family members and friends.

The family will receive friends from 2:00pm to 3:30pm on Saturday, June 11, 2022, at Thacker Brothers Lake Monticello Funeral Home in Palmyra.

Private entombment will be in Mountlawn Memorial Park in North Wilkesboro, NC.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the Samaritan’s Purse of Boone, NC; The Salvation Army of Charlottesville, VA; and Beaver Dam Baptist Church of Troy, VA.
