Jerome Rush Obituary

Jerome Stevenson Rush Sr., 74, of Esmont, VA, departed this life on Monday, December 19, 2022 at Sentara Martha Jefferson Hospital in Charlottesville.   He was born August 24, 1948 in Esmont, a son of the late Alfonso L. Rush Jr. and Virginia Barrett Rush.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Alfonso L. Rush III and Albert D. Rush.

Jerry or Hook, as he was known, was educated in the Albemarle County School System. He was a baptized member of Chestnut Grove Baptist Church where he sung on the Mass Choir, Senior Choir and DHLewis Men’s Chorus. Jerry was a Vietnam Veteran and served in the 101st Airborne Division of the U.S. Army. He worked in the building supply industry with Lowes of Charlottesville and Blue Ridge Building Supply in Crozet.  Once retired, he enjoyed spending time with friends and/or sitting in his recliner with a clear view of who was coming and going on Chestnut Grove Court.  If he didn’t recognize the car, he would call the next house over and ask whose car was that.  His other pastimes were watching old black and white TV sitcoms and westerns.  The highlight of his Sundays was watching sports, it didn’t matter if it was football, basketball, golf, horse racing, he loved it all.  But let’s not forget…he loved JLo videos.  Jerry was funny, believed in speaking his mind and enjoying life. Everyone knows that Jerry’s response to any question is “mmhmm”. He was also kind and opened his home to everyone whether visiting or needing a place to stay for a while.  He loved spending time with family, so his home was the hub for all family gatherings.

He leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Eden D. Rush of Esmont; three sons, Jerome S. Rush Jr. (Tracy) of Pemberton, NJ, Jody Rush (LaTrish) of Palmyra, VA, and Vaughan Jackson of Charlottesville; two daughters: Sherita Sisson of Ruckersville, VA and Shelly Rush-Evans (Michael)  of Palmyra; nine granddaughters, Arrianna, Ashley, Courtlynn, Jasmine, Jordan, Kennady, Nakyra, Shaleja, and Shameika;  five grandsons, Cameron, Chavis, Desmond, Jaylen, and Shahir; five great-grandchildren; three sisters, Elsie Taylor (Ralph) and Sheila Rush of Charlottesville, and Lynne Rush of Richmond, VA; one uncle, Leon (Charlotte) Barrett of Baltimore, MD; two aunts, Bell Rush of Esmont and Mary Rush of White Sulphur Springs, WVA; two brother-in-laws, James Turner and Mark Brown (Jannette); two sister-in-laws, Gayle Scott (Thomas) and Robin Brown; and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.

A funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, December 27, 2022 at Chestnut Grove Baptist Church, 8825 Chestnut Grove Rd., Esmont, VA 22937.  The viewing will be one hour prior to the service at the church.
