Joseph “Joe” O’Rourke, 78, of Scottsville, Virginia, passed away peacefully on August 1, 2025. Born on January 24, 1947, in New York City, Joe lived a full life marked by service, devotion to family, and an enduring admiration for the American West.
A proud veteran of the Unite States Army, Joe later built a long and dedicated career with the NYC Telephone Company before retiring. He was known for his hardworking spirit, quick wit, and the deep love he held for his family and country.
Joe is survived by his beloved wife, Kathleen O’Rourke, his sons, James O’Rourke (wife Katie), Richard O’Rourke, and Kevin O’Rourke (wife Kristen); his brother James O’Rourke; grandchildren Ryan, Richard, Reagan, Emma and Ethan; and his great-grandson, Tayda James.
Joe was the ultimate John Wayne fan, with a large and impressive tribute collection dedicated to the “The Duke”. He often said that when his time came, he’d finally get to meet “The Duke” and we’re sure he is tipping his hat to him now.
A mass will be held to honor Joe’s life at St. George Catholic Church in Scottsville, Virginia on August 30, 2025, at 11:00 a.m.
In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to a veterans’ charity of your choice or to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Joe’s Memory.
He will be deeply missed and forever remembered for his strength, humor, and unwavering devotion to those he loved.
