Leroy McCampbell Obituary

Col. Leroy Lewis McCampbell, 93, of Lake Monticello, passed away on Tuesday, November 9, 2021 at Martha Jefferson Hospital surrounded by his family.

He was born July 23, 1928 in Greenridge, MO, a son of the late Bruce and Beatrice (George) McCampbell. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia Ann (Heryford) McCampbell.

Leroy was an amazing man who brightened the lives of everyone he touched. His infectious laugh, kindness and stories will live on in our hearts and minds. He served his country in the United States Air Force for 27 years, and as a pilot he fought in the Korean and Vietnam wars. Leroy was a highly decorated officer who retired in 1979, after which he had a successful career at McDonnell Douglas.

In 1996 Leroy and Pat choose Lake Monticello as their “forever home”. Leroy was an active volunteer in his community, the South Plains Presbyterian Church; and former board member at LMOA. He loved his family, friends and country and will be deeply missed.

Survivors include two children, Sharon McCampbell of Lake Monticello, and Steve McCampbell (Eileen) of Scottsville; four grandchildren, Ryan, Kayla, Connor, and Jaime McCampbell; sisters, Lorraine Holtzen, and Marjorie Etchell; a special niece, Phyllis Hartwell; and his caregiver, Joanne Farmer.

A Memorial Service will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, December 17, 2021 at South Plains Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Dr. Laura Sugg. The celebration of his life will follow at his home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the Lake Monticello Rescue Squad, 14 Slice Rd., Palmyra, VA 22963, or Hospice of the Piedmont, 675 Peter Jefferson Pkwy, Charlottesville, VA 22911.
