Margaret Anne Shackelford Browning

Margaret Anne Shackelford Browning, 87, of Scottsville, passed away on Thursday, June 26, 2025, after a lengthy illness.

She was born on August 7, 1937, in Fluvanna County, the daughter of the late Julian S. Shackelford, Jr. and Molly Haden Shackelford.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Henry Thurston Browning, Jr.; twins, Michael Andrew and Melissa Anne Browning.

Ms. Browning was a member of the Women’s Committee of the Farm Bureau. She spent a year as a Teacher’s Aide at Cunningham Elementary before dedicating countless hours as a Floral Designer for Plantscapes. After her time at Plantscapes, she went to work at Martha Jefferson on the switchboard until her retirement when she returned to Martha Jefferson as a volunteer in the Guest Services. She especially loved her time delivering flowers to the patients.  

She was a faithful attendee of Wesley’s Chapel on Rolling Road S., teaching Sunday School when she was still able. When she wasn’t serving others, Ms. Browning was busy getting her hands dirty. She was an avid gardener, spending countless hours in her yard on the landscape.

She is survived by her two sons, Daniel Thurston Browning and his wife, Bernadette, and Joseph Keith Browning and his wife Elaine, all of Scottsville; three grandsons, Christopher Ian Browning and his wife, Linn, Michael Gilchrist Browning and his wife, Nikki and Matthew Aaron Browning and his wife, Rachel; three granddaughters, Kiera Browning, Katherine Leigh Shifflett and Rachel Anne Berry and her husband, Matt; special granddaughter, Amber Marie Johnson; her great-grandchildren, Annabelle and Nora Shifflett, Madeleine and Palmer Berry, James, Caleb, Peter, Taylor and Abigail Browning.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to Edna Davis, Ms. Browning’s caregiver who became family. The love, patience and compassion she showed Ms. Browning’s during her illness never went unnoticed.  

A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00am on Tuesday, July 1, 2025, at Wesley’s Chapel, 1809 Rolling Rd. S. Scottsville, VA 24590 with Pastor Tim Stark presiding. Interment will follow at Fluvanna Baptist Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the funeral service at Wesley’s Chapel.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Ronald McDonald House in Charlottesville or St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.
