Marguerite Hughes Obituary
Margaret Louise Mayberry Hughes, “Marguerite”, 98, of Scottsville, VA died Monday November 7th at Albemarle Health & Rehabilitation Center in Charlottesville.
Born in Concord, VA May 24, 1924, she was the youngest child of Harvey Nowlin Mayberry and Mamie Elizabeth Smith Mayberry.
In addition to her parents, Marguerite was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph C. Hughes; her son, Joseph G. Hughes (“Joe”,“Jody”); and six siblings: brothers, Hunter, Elwood, and Nowlin; sisters, Bessie, Della and Frances. Marguerite was orphaned as a child and raised by her foster parents, Benjamin and Pearl Herndon, and foster sister, Christine Herndon Crews, also preceded her in death.
She is survived by her daughter-in-law, Linda Jones Hughes; two grandchildren, Candice Hughes Clark (Ron) and Benjamin Joseph Hughes; seven great-grandchildren, Kristen Clark Ragland (Austin), Peyton and Dylan Clark, Graham, Evelyn, Molly and Miller Hughes; three great-great-grandchildren Easton, Trenton and Brooks Ragland, and her sister-in-law, Irene Hughes.
A resident of the Scottsville area for most of her life, Marguerite was a graduate of Scottsville High School. She was a member of Scottsville United Methodist Church, where for years she sang in the choir and was famously known for her pound cakes. She leaves her family and friends with treasured memories.
The family would like to thank the entire staff at Albemarle Health & Rehabilitation Center for the wonderful care Marguerite received during her stay.
A funeral service will be held at Thacker Brothers Scottsville Funeral Home on Thursday, November 10th at 2pm. The family will receive friends an hour prior to the service and the interment will follow the service at Scottsville Cemetery.
