Ms. Mary E. Jones, 77, of Charlottesville, Virginia, departed this life on Saturday, June 4, 2022, at her home surrounded by her beloved family.
She was born in Albemarle County, Virginia, on March 27, 1945, the daughter of the late George Grady Sr. and Nancy Grady. She was the wife of the late Eddie F. Jones and mother of the late Jamie T. Burton.
Mary received her education through Charlottesville City Schools, she was employed by Frank IX for many years and employed through Charlotteville City Schools from where she retired after 10 years of service. She was a friend to all that graced her presence and always had an encouraging word to give. She enjoyed long walks, shopping, watching movies, decorating her home with roosters, giving and receiving flowers, getting her nails and hair done, watching her favorite football team the Washington Redskins, most of all she enjoyed spending time with her family; cookouts, birthday parties, family dinners, and taking pictures.
Mary was a faithful member of Spreading Oak Baptist Church in Arvonia, Virginia under the leadership of Pastor Joseph Allen. She loved hearing her church choir sing. She was a woman after God’s own heart, her faith was unwavering and she believed in the power of prayer. She was a true believer and trusted God to carry her through her illness, no matter what the diagnoses were Mary never complained.
Mary leaves to cherish her memory daughters, Mary Steppe, and husband George Steppe of Charlottesville, Virginia, Lillian Burton of Newport News, Virginia, and Orelia Bowman, and special friend Keith Fitch of Buckingham, Virginia; one son, Wendell Burton, and wife Paula Burton of Charlottesville, Virginia; Nineteen grandchildren; Thirty-two great grandchildren; one great granddaughter on the way; her fiancé and caretaker Lee Johnson; one brother George Grady Jr. of Baltimore, Maryland; two sisters-in-law’s Julia Keys and Mildred Neighbors; two brother-in-law’s Grafton Jones and James Jones of Charlottesville, Virginia. Mary also leaves to cherish her memory a special friend, Rosa Nixon; two special friends that were more like sisters, Virginia Harrison and the late Edith Greene; neighbors, Laura, Dave, Lilly, and Owen Saxton; a host of nieces, nephews, and extended family members and friends.
A funeral service will be conducted on Friday, June 10, 2022, at 11:00am at Spreading Oak Baptist Church, 1064 Spreading Oak Rd. Arvonia, VA. Elder Sherrika Nowell-Greene will deliver the eulogy. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, June 9, 2022, from 6pm-8pm at Thacker Brothers Funeral Home, 650 Valley St. Scottsville, VA 24590 and one hour prior to the funeral service. Thacker Brothers Funeral Homes oversees arrangements. The repass will be private.
