Maxwell Haslip Obituary

Retired U.S. Navy First Class Petty Officer Maxwell “Max” Leroy Haslip Jr., 71, of Palmyra, passed away at his home on Monday, January 26, 2026. Max was born in Port Huron, Michigan, on September 3, 1954, the eldest child of Maxwell Leroy Haslip Sr. and Katherine (Lee) Haslip.

After graduating from high school in Virginia Beach in 1972, Max enlisted in the Navy where he served for 20 years. He later continued a career in public service with the Virginia Employment Commission and then the Social Security Administration before fully retiring in 2024.

Max appreciated a good engine, a great song, and raising a glass with friends. He was a proud Corvette enthusiast who enjoyed traveling with his wife to car shows and events. He also took pleasure in being a regular at classic rock concerts and appreciated relaxing at a winery or the Smithfield Inn whenever he was in the area. He worked hard but also enjoyed the ride.

Max was preceded in death by his father, Maxwell Haslip, Sr.

Survivors include his devoted wife of 23 years, Wanda Lewin Johnson; his mother, Katherine Haslip; his sister, Deborah Keene (Robert); along with children Robert Haslip and Jennifer Shirley (Jeffrey).

A graveside service will be held Friday, February 6 at 1:00 p.m. at Culpeper National Cemetery. Thacker Brothers Lake Monticello Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
