Miranda "Randi" Marcella (Mehrer) Ewing died peacefully on Sunday, October 19, 2025, in Charlottesville, VA.
Miranda was born to Reuben Richard Mehrer and Genofeva Evangeline (Schulz) Mehrer on July 15, 1930, in Mott, ND. She loved growing up in a small town, hopping on the train to visit grandparents and cousins on their nearby farms, ice skating on the frozen river and sledding down the snow-packed streets in wintertime. Upon the untimely death of her father when she was just 12 years old, the family moved to Bismarck where she adapted to “big city” life, quickly making new friends and focusing on her schooling. She attended both Bismarck State Teachers College, and Jamestown College, and began her career as an elementary school teacher.
In 1952, while in her first year of teaching, she married Hollie “Red” Ewing, Jr. of Turtle Lake, ND. They began their lives together in Turtle Lake, then moved to Indiana for a time before heading east when Red joined the Army - first stationed at Fort Lee, VA, then Rehoboth, MA, where their two daughters, Heidi and Rebecca were born. She continued teaching school in Rehoboth while raising her girls, devoting much of her spare time to community organizations, especially the Congregational church. In 1975 the family moved to Bradford, VT, where she continued her work in the Congregational church, serving on the church’s flower committee and volunteering at their “wild game” dinners held annually each Autumn.
In the 1980s, Randi and Red moved to Cape Cod where they were caretakers of a beautiful oceanfront property. She enjoyed living on the Cape for many years before moving south in 2008 to live with her daughter, Becky, at Lake Monticello, VA. Randi filled her days by reading newspapers and watching lots and lots of sports on TV – she was an avid fan of college baseball and basketball, as well as national and Olympic figure skating. The family is grateful for the care she received in the final year of her life at Albemarle Health & Rehab, especially from her fellow residents who watched out for her so lovingly. Randi touched the lives of so many with her warm, caring spirit, and sweet smile, which stayed with her to her final days.
She will be deeply missed by her daughters Heidi Ewing Kneale (Edward) of Boerne, TX, and Rebecca Ewing (Paul Ferlan) of Lake Monticello, VA; grandchildren, Lee Casey (Ray) and Edward Kneale IV (Kelly); great-grandchildren, Harrison and Olivia Casey; and numerous loving cousins, including Geno (Mehrer) Sloan and Medora (Mehrer) Moburg.
She is preceded in death by her husband Hollie Ewing, Jr., parents Reuben and Genofeva Mehrer, and sister Roxanne Dacotah Mehrer.
A memorial service will take place on Thursday, November 13, at 11:00am at Christ Episcopal Church, Charlottesville, VA.
In lieu of flowers, you may consider making a donation to Hospice of the Piedmont, Charlottesville.
