Myrtle Johnson Rhodes Goodwin—better known to most as “Bubbles”—passed away peacefully at The Baptist Home in Ironton, Missouri, on Monday, March 10, 2025, at the age of 94.
Bubbles was born on January 8, 1931, in Scottsville, Virginia, to the late Charles Benjamin and Ruth Johnson.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Lewis Edward Rhodes Sr.; her son, Lewis Edward Rhodes Jr.; and her second husband, Edward Goodwin. She was also preceded in death by her sisters, Dot, BB, Kitty, and Rudy; her brothers, Eugene, Benjy, and Gill; as well as her son-in-law, Norman Ranson.
Bubbles is survived by her loving daughters, Kay Punyanitya (Pong) and Judy Foster, both of Charlottesville; her daughter-in-law, Sherry Rhodes of Scottsville; and her sister, Frances Turner. She leaves behind six cherished grandchildren: Shelly (Brandon), Sam (Candace), Sara (Aaron), Lee (Kayla), Jarred (Leah), and Danielle (William); 17 great- grandchildren; and one great-great grandson. She is also survived by many beloved nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends. Additionally, she is lovingly remembered by the children of her late husband, Edward Goodwin: Bill (Vicki), Mike, Alice, and Micah (Sierra).
A lifelong member of Scottsville Baptist Church, Bubbles served faithfully as a Deacon, Sunday School teacher, and choir member. For over 40 years, she worked as a teacher assistant at Scottsville Elementary in Albemarle County Schools, where she nurtured and touched the lives of countless students. Her home was a warm and welcoming haven, always open to family and friends. Known for her vivacious spirit, infectious laughter, and radiant smile, Bubbles brought joy to everyone she met. Her voice could soothe or sparkle with excitement, and her carefree spirit was the heart of every gathering. She found joy in butterflies, playing bingo, shopping, and, most of all, beach trips.
Bubbles lived a life full of love, laughter, and light—leaving a legacy of kindness, warmth, and unwavering joy. She will be deeply missed by all who were fortunate enough to know her.
