Nannie Washington Smith, 87, of Charlottesville, entered the heavenly gates on September 7, 2025, surrounded by her loving family.
A native of Howardsville, Virginia, Nannie was born on December 23, 1937, to the late James Thomas Washington and Ellen Henley Washington.
Nannie joined Mt. Alto Baptist Church at a young age. She attended church faithfully and loved her church family. In her later years, she became an usher; serving until her health made her unable.
Nannie’s family brought her great joy. She loved spending time around the table enjoying a delicious meal with her loved ones. She also enjoyed spending time outside tending to her flowers.
In addition to her parents, Nannie was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Smith, Sr., her brothers, Samuel Washington, Joseph Washington and Leroy Washington and her sisters, Annie Powell and Frances Smith.
She leaves behind her beloved children, Robert “Bobby” Washington and his wife, Claudia, Kenneth Washington and his friend, Lois, Sheila Washington, and Walter Smith, Jr. and his wife Tina. Her siblings, James R. Washington and his wife, Deborah, Cornelia Austin and her friend, Len and Elizabeth Perkins and her husband, Bill. She is also survived by many loving grandchildren, great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00am on Tuesday, September 16, 2025, at Mt. Alto Baptist Church, 4330 Mt. Alto Road Esmont, VA 22937 with Rev. Lloyd Feggans presiding. Interment will immediately follow in the church cemetery. All are welcome to join the family for a meal following the interment.
Nannie will be available for public viewing on Monday, September 15, 2025, from 12:00pm – 4:00pm at Thacker Brothers Funeral Home, 650 Valley St. Scottsville VA 24590.
