Pastor Harlin Sykes Obituary

Pastor Harlin “Chubby” Sykes, 73, of Scottsville, went to be with the lord on Thursday, April 14, 2022.

He was born on February 27, 1949, a son of the late Woodrow and Stella (Lester) Sykes.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Betty Ann (Woods) Sykes; and his four brothers, Kermit, Clyde, Ed Russ, and Darrell “Bubby” Sykes.

Chubby was the dedicated pastor of the Potter House Church in Scottsville and had many faithful members. He touched so many lives in his life on earth and never met a stranger! Visiting the sick, the constant urge to help in any way he could, his warm hugs, the beautiful sound of his guitar and his bright soul will always be filled in our precious memories of him. “Chubby the nail driver” could do anything from pouring concrete to building houses. He was a master craftsman and always put his all in anything he did. He always ‘found a way out of no way’.

Survivors include his first wife, Deborah Hatley; 3 siblings, Tina and husband, Harold Shortt, Lois and husband, Butch Fuller, and Harold and Wife, Kathy Sykes; four children, Bobby and wife, Phyllis Sykes of Barboursville, Cammie Sykes of Louisa, Toby of Barboursville, Pam Weisenborn of Stuarts Draft and Becky Stephens; 3 step children, Sherry and daughter, Olivia, Raymond Dorrier (Debra) and Bobby Jr.; and 12 grandchildren, Paige, Camela, Brittany, Kaela, Kimberly, Kody, Katelyn, Seth, Nicholas, Ethan, Toby Jr, Jake and Kaitlyn; along many great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews, and a host of extended family members and friends.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, April 21, 2022, at Thacker Brothers Scottsville Funeral Home, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM. The funeral service will be private.

The family welcomes friends to a celebration of life on Saturday, April 30, 2022, at 1:00 PM at Eden Ministries Church, 2900 Merrie Meadows Lane, Keswick, Virginia 22947.
