Phyllis Campbell, 81, passed away February 2, 2022, surrounded by her family. Phyllis was born on August 8, 1940, in Providence, Rhode Island. She was the daughter of the late John Mercurio and Josephine LaRosa Mercurio.
After attending high school, she worked as an Usherette at the local theatre where she met the love of her life, an 18 year old Navy Seaman named Woodrow Campbell from Virginia. They married in 1957 and would remain together 48 years until his death. After Woodrow was discharged from Navy, they moved to his home town of Nelson County, VA. Over the years, she would have 3 children: Woodrow (Woody) Campbell, Jr, Darlene Campbell Packard and Karen Garrison.
While working alongside her husband, farming and taking care of her family, she attended Alberene Baptist Church where she served God in many ways, such as a Sunday school and Vacation Bible School teacher and also served the Shut-ins who could no longer make the journey to church, sharing the word of God and bringing meals. Helping others always gave her such joy. She volunteered as a Pink Lady and later as a Patient Information and Assistance Specialist for the Martha Jefferson. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, she worked at Red Hill Elementary School. By the later 70’s, she started working for Virginia National Bank where she stayed for many years. After retiring from the outside workforce, Phyllis enjoyed spending time with and taking care of her grandchildren. Together, they’d go swimming, to the movies, out to eat and play kickball and other games in the yard. Over the years she and the family enjoyed the many, many memories that were made during our yearly family vacations. She also enjoyed gardening, and was very proud of her mastery of canning fruits, meats and vegetables. Reading was another enjoyment along with travelling with her friends and shopping.
Phyllis’ most prized possession was her family. She was blessed with 3 children, 6 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren.
There will be no public viewing and a graveside service will be conducted at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, February 8, 2022 at Alberene Cemetery by the Rev. Jeff Cale.
The family requests everyone wear a mask to protect those who may have health issues. There will not be a gathering after the service.
