Ruth “Rudy” Johnson Shumaker, 98, of Scottsville passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 13, 2023, at home surrounded by her family.
Rudy was born on February 7, 1925, a daughter of the late Charles Benjamin Johnson and Ruth Allen Johnson. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by three sisters, Dorothy “Dot” Carroll, Beatrice “BB” Proffitt, and Katherine “Kitty” Spradlin; three brothers, Charles “Benjy” Johnson, Eugene “Dukes” Johnson, and Gilbert “Gil” Johnson. She was also preceded in death by her husband and love of her life, Frank Walter Shumaker.
Rudy is survived by her son Frank “Twig” Walter Shumaker, Jr.; a daughter-in-law Janet Shumaker; two granddaughters Amy Shumaker and Laura Drummond; a grandson-in-law Chance Drummond; a great-granddaughter Amelia Drummond; two sisters Frances “Frankie” Turner and Myrtle “Bubbles” Goodwin; and many beloved nieces, nephews, loved ones, and friends.
She loved nothing more than being with her family. Rudy showed her love in many ways, with her time and help, cards and notes, and homecooked meals and fresh vegetables from her garden. Her passion was being outdoors, working in her garden, and watching the birds in her yard, particularly cardinals or “red birds” as she called them.
Rudy was a lifelong active member of Scottsville Baptist Church. She was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, the VFW Ladies Auxiliary, and the Skippers Club of Scottsville. She was retired from the Uniroyal Tire Co. Scottsville plant, where she worked from 1946 to 1986. Born and raised in Scottsville, she was proud to be a part of her community.
The family wishes to send a special note of thanks to Claudia Karr and the entire Karr and Melander family for all they have done to care for their Aunt Rudy.
