Shirley Wingo Saunders, 93, of Palmyra, VA, passed away, Friday, January 16, 2015 at The Village at Gordon House in Gordonsville, VA.

Mrs. Saunders was born in Drakes Branch, VA on Feb. 10, 1921, a daughter of the late William Holdman Wingo and Nellie Hilldrup Wingo.

In addition to her parents, Shirley was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Carter Lee Saunders; her sister Nellie Short; and her brothers Holdman Wingo and Richard Wingo.

Mr. and Mrs. Saunders spent their retirement years residing in Warrenton, VA. During those years Shirley enjoyed gardening, traveling and entertaining her family. For the past six years Shirley has resided at The Village at Gordon House in Gordonsville, VA.

Mrs. Saunders was a member of the Warrenton Presbyterian Church after moving from Alexandria, VA in 1977. Shirley was a graduate of Mary Washington College in 1942 and taught elementary school in the City of Alexandria, and Warrenton school districts. Shirley taught first grade for the City of Alexandria for 35 years until moving to Warrenton, where she continued her teaching career for 3 more years.

Survivors include her daughter, Carolyn Saunders Stenger and husband, Pat of Lake Monticello, VA; grandchildren, Clare Stenger Winn of Crozet, VA; Lindsay Stenger Whitcomb of Weyers Cave, VA; four great-grandchildren, Bradley Patrick Winn, Ellie Clare Winn, and Grace Ivy Winn all of Crozet, VA; and Samuel Stenger Whitcomb of Weyers Cave, VA; and her sister, Lydia Mahanes of Gordonsville, VA.

A private graveside service was held on Wednesday January 21, 2015 at the Fairfax City Cemetery in Fairfax, VA.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimers’s Disease Association, 11240 Waples Mill Road, Suite 402, Fairfax, VA 22030
