Virginia Wood Obituary

Mary Virginia Fenwick (Ginny) Wood, (Mom, Grandma, Mo-Mo, Miss Ginny)

She began life on November 20, 1925 in Nelson County, VA. Born at her grandparents “Mammie and Papa J. B. Wells” home in Howardsville, she was a daughter of the late Hunter E. and Mary (Wells) Fenwick and ended her 96-year journey on January 13, 2022 in Charlottesville.

Going on before her to lead the way were her parents, her in-laws, her adoring husband of 55 years, Vanzy L. Wood, Jr., her beloved son, Donald E. Wood, her sister Eva Helen (Punky), three sisters and brothers-in-law, one niece and two nephews, many other family members and friends, and her beloved pets, Princess and Gizmo.

Left behind are her loving, devoted daughter, Ms. Dale Elaine Wood, her faithful granddaughters and grandsons-in-law, Elaine (Jason) Irizarry, Meagan (Willie) Layne, her cherished great-grandchildren, Hunter and Noah Layne, and Abby, Maria, Sarah and Jo Irizzary, several nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews, her church family, her VFW-Auxiliary family, and friends that were like family and called her ‘Mom’ or ‘Grandma’.

After graduating high school in Scottsville, she left Howardsville and moved to Richmond, working at the Federal Reserve Bank, then moved back to Charlottesville and worked at Trailways. She always said, even though she went to school with Vanzy at Scottsville School, in February of 1946 she was standing in front of Keller and George Jewelers and who drove by but the boy she met in seventh grade. He stopped to see if she needed a ride home. She said yes! He swept her off her feet and were married Nov 3rd of that same year and history started. She worked hard beside her husband, in every aspect, from building the house, to building the electrical business and keeping the office straight.

She was a faithful member of New Faith United Methodist Church in Schuyler, VA, for over 50 years serving as choir director, pianist and on several committees of the Church, some being chairman, UMW member and secretary.

A devoted and lifetime member of the Auxiliary to the VFW Scottsville Post 8169, she held the office of the Conductress for 12 years, and Trustee in District 13. She was also a member of the Masonic Eastern Star-in Fork Union.

She loved God and was a faithful Christian servant in every way. She never missed a Sunday for church unless she was sick, or when the church closed for the Covid restrictions. She devoted her life to her family, always making sure the children were taken care of first, especially at mealtimes. Continuing her husband’s recipe for bread and rolls, she was always making them for the VFW dinners, church functions, Thanksgiving and Christmas, and giving them as gifts along with her cakes. She found great joy in teaching one of her great-grandsons to cook.

A skilled seamstress, she loved to sew and could make and mend anything and it had to be perfect, or she’d take it out and redo it!  She made many quilt toppers and loved going to the VFW and meeting with the “ladies” to put it together to finish the quilt. Many of these were given as gifts or put in a raffle for the Aux/VFW, the Howardsville Masonic Lodge, and the Church.

She crocheted many afghans, making each of her grandchildren and greatgrandchildren one, loved crossword puzzles, her 1pm daily soap opera, “Days of Our Lives” which she did not want to miss it!

Mom was the glue that held the family together. Her impact on the community was tremendous and her loss will be felt by many for years to come
